The GeoAmericas program is a pioneering multimedia and multilingual geo-referenced system that promotes sustainable tourism and cultural industries while showcasing the extensive heritage and cultural diversity of Latin America and the Caribbean. In partnership with local institutions, the program uses geographic information systems, texts, videos and 360º images to identify and disseminate cultural, educational, environmental and health-related sites and information. GeoAmericas reaches a broad audience, from regional and global tourists to students, researchers and educators.

The program also increases the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises operating in the tourism sector and offers Website training and development opportunities.

Community Museums

museos comunitarios2 copy copyThe Community Museums program advances the development, implementation and smooth operation of community museums in the Americas by providing practical information and sustainable guidance to museum directors as well as leaders and members of rural and urban communities.

The program’s portal hosts detailed information about 120 community museums in nearly a dozen countries and provides extensive and user-friendly manuals, training videos, and materials on the role community museums play in the cultural, social and economic development of the region. The program also brings together museum and community leaders in workshops to receive additional capacity building and reflect on their personal experiences.

Community museums are created and maintained by community members themselves. Their existence strengthens cultural identity, preserves traditions and collective history, and provides education and job opportunities. The ICDF’s Community Museum program helps promote communities’ active participation and sparks the creation and development of new museums throughout the hemisphere.
